New KCMS President, Dr. Stephen Salanski, Addresses the Members

I am very honored and humbled to begin serving over 3,400 physicians in five countiessalanski, steve as  President of your Kansas City Medical Society – and to follow in the footsteps of many previous excellent Medical Society leaders, including our Immediate Past President Michael O’Dell.

I have been a Family Physician for thirty years – and for the past ten years I have been Program Director of the Research Family Medicine Residency. Teaching medicine to young physicians is truly my passion.

My other major professional interest is in the arena of community health. For the past several years I have co-chaired three different groups that are involved in community health – the Kansas City Quality Improvement Consortium, Lee’ Summit Health Education Advisory Board, and the Center for Practical Bioethics Kansas City Ethics Committee Consortium. In addition, back in 2005-2006, I co-led Clean Air Lee’s Summit (along with fellow Family Physician Ed Kraemer) in a Citizen’s Petition Initiative that led to a 71% majority vote in favor of Smokefree Workplaces in Lee’s Summit.

My goals as Medical Society President include continuing to develop the Leadership Initiative for our members started under Dr. O’Dell and our Executive Director/CEO Angela Bedell in the areas of Executive Leadership, Patient Advocacy, and Community Leadership. I am also very excited about continuing to foster growth in the relationship they have started with the Wyandotte and Johnson Counties Medical Society.

Finally, in the spirit of the organization that brought clean water to KC and founded both the Community Blood Bank and Blue Cross, I want to work on advancing the patient advocacy portion of our mission statement, particularly in helping to provide healthcare services for the large number of KC citizens who still “fall between the cracks” in our current Healthcare System.

I look forward to working with all of you to make 2016 the healthiest year ever in Kansas City!”

Stephen Salanski, MD
President, Kansas City Medical Society
Program Director, Research Family Medicine Residency
