KCMS Board Meeting- in Brief

On February 22nd, the KCMS board of directors held a board meeting at the society’s offices on the Country Club Plaza. This is a brief summary of what was discussed at that meeting:

  • Dr. Salanski told the board that there was a need to revisit and update our society documents, policies and Bylaws.
  • Dr. O’Dell stated that the society needs to be preparing physicians for value-based purchasing. He told the board that Merck will potentially be putting on another program with KCMS in the spring. The intent is to bring in a speaker from Dallas, which has a similar healthcare climate to that of Kansas City. Mrs. Bedell added that KCMS hopes to build on the successes of the Getting to Value program which Merck put on with KCMS last year. She mentioned that this program may be an evening event, rather than a full day event. She said that the Executive Committee will be working on this more going forward.
  • The WyJo Medical Society has been looking for ways to collaborate with KCMS. A project they suggested is to collaborate on supporting Tobacco 21 in Kansas City area communities, beginning with letters of support. Mrs. Bedell explained to the board that the plan is to take a three-pronged approach to promote Tobacco 21 in communities:
    1. A letter from the organizations
    2. Letters from physicians
    3. Posters or mini posters to be distributed to members to display in their offices- to reach the patients.\
  • Dr. Salanski explained to the board that “project access” is a general term for programs which help the uninsured to obtain medical services. He said that MetroCare, WyJo Care, and Nothland Health Care Access are three such programs. He then told the board that the three project access programs listed above share some of their funding, and that a new plan needs to be made for these groups to work with each other as well as with the medical societies. The KCMS board voted in favor of signing a letter to the REACH foundation and the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City regarding these discussions and potential funding for facilitation of next steps. It was then noted that both WyJo Care and MetroCare have also approved the letter.
  • Mrs. Bedell mentioned an advocacy project being done by students at William Jewell on the subject of medical marijuana. The students will:
    • Provide a presentation of secondary research to the board at the April board meeting.
    • Survey members to research attitudes regarding medical marijuana and what they believe the society’s role should be.

Mrs. Bedell then asked the board to pass along any information they would like to see included in the presentation.

Board meetings are open to any Active member. The next KCMS board meeting will take place on April 25th at 6:15 pm.
